Billie Eillish - Fashion beyond the body
More than just a fashion icon, Billie Eilish uses her style as a political and social manifestation. She began her career at 13 years old and the way she dresses is a statement for a new generation. Talking about Billie as a fashion figure is about what her image represents. So, here I present Billie Eilish's most iconic fashion moments!
At just 18, she swept all four general field categories at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2020, making her the first female and youngest artist to do so and the youngest solo act to win the prestigious Album of the Year award. She also became the second ever and the first singer to win all four general field categories in the same year since Christopher Cross did in 1981.
What Eilish represents in the music industry reflects on her Style and the way she wants to be seen. It is common to know that this industry takes more from the female artists and how they look, most of the time being judge by the image and not by the talent.
Eilish revealed in a Calvin Klein campaign that everything she puts on is deliberate, a method to deflect judgment of her body. “I never want the world to know everything about me,” she said. “I mean, that’s why I wear big, baggy clothes. Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘Oh, she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat ass,’ ‘she’s got a fat ass.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”
For the construction of a strong image, we see a mix of skate-wear, hip hop, and goth with oversized, bold, and drastically shapes and colors.
On nails, hair, clothes, or accessories they are a really important element in Billie's Style.
Monochromatic, Color Block, Pastel, Neon.. there's no restriction in terms of creativity, Ironically she mixes the goth and dark vibe with a really colorful and playful piece, the composition varies between the concepts, but all very modern and young style.
As mentioned before Billie wants to construct her image around her talent and not about the way her body looks.
But more than this, when she creates this new silhouette we are opening possibilities for gender-fluid clothes and a slight reference of the exaggeration on cartoons.
She speaks directly to a new generation of trendsetters and a new habit of dress up.
Patterns and Monogram
For becoming a big representative personality of a new generation aesthetic Billie was noticed by big brands and started to incorporate high fashion patterns/overbranding on her looks.
Some are really explicit with big monograms, but others with some knowledge elements from the brand, Billie seems to be the perfect figure to display conceptual and playful elements from new collections.
Cartoons and Animes
The pop-cultural elements construct a good base for Billie's type of local patterns, is not unusual to see very famous cartoons and animes references on her looks.
It's a really creative way to break the oversize silhouette with fun and iconic elements, also are perfect to incorporate personality on basic pieces.
Hair and Nails
And last but not least her Nails and Hair style, Billie translates all the elements that construct her personality in these two.
Long and colorful nails with variations of patterns matching the looks, bringing back the nail art from the 2000s.
A colorful and modern hairstyle that accompanying her new album style, we can see this really clearly between the years and how she evolves her style with her career.
