Trends foretelling

"If your neighbour starts wearing something, it's high time to stop wearing it" is what the teacher in my fashion college said to us. Fashion trends come as quickly as they go, but have you ever wondered where they actually come from? Is there a masonry of big designers? Or maybe trends are just random?

Who makes trends?

The process of trend-making is a mixture of culture, events, styles, and ideas. Luxury brands are influenced by the streets and the streets are influenced by the luxury brands. Fashion not only comes from a designers' mind but is inspired by pop culture, social changes, art, or technology.

And what about technology? Access to the internet and social media made it easier for people to get famous. Influencers are not called like that for nothing, followers look up to them for ideas, they also get paid for the advertisements which can make it a full-time job. Going viral is not easy, but can make you a famous stylist in one night, without experience or connections. If getting famous fails, you can still join fashion communities on facebook groups or forums, where you can exchange ideas and explore new styles.

The most obvious sources of trends are still luxury designers. They mix all of the above with their own ideas in order to produce collections, which are then presented on catwalks, fashion weeks, and in magazines. Then the fashion shows are analyzed and concepts copied by the big, commercial brands, where they again become mainstream.

How to follow on fashion trends?

WGSN - probably the most important trend forecasting service in the fashion industry. They sell different subscriptions including fashion, lifestyle or interior forecasting. Don't worry if you're not a commercial brand though, they run a facebook site, instagram, twitter, and youtube channel, where you can take a peek into the future of fashion.

The streets - look around! Not only millionaires make the trends, they emerge with the streets, movements, and creative people like you and me. If you can't find fresh inspirations where you live, you can always use the power of the internet. Here are some good streetsnap pages:
